Benefits of Oral Sedation for Children
Oral sedation provides a safe, non-invasive way for your child to relax before any dental treatment. When your child takes the prescribed medicine, it will induce a relaxing, sleep-like state within a short time.
Your child will remain conscious and responsive but won’t feel any pain or sensations during treatment. The sedative is not only easy to administer but also has little to no side effects, allowing children to return to their daily routine within the same day.
What Happens During Oral Conscious Sedation at Our Katy, TX Practice
At the time of initial consultation, we will take the time to review your child’s dental and medical history. If your child has mild to moderate dental anxiety, our pediatric dentist will discuss whether oral conscious sedation is the right choice for them. Typically, you will be asked to arrive about an hour before the appointment, giving the sedative enough time to take effect.
When it takes effect, your child will begin to feel drowsy but will still remain aware of their surroundings. Throughout the procedure, our team will closely monitor vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation, to ensure your child’s safety. Once the treatment is complete, we will assess their alertness level, making sure they are stable before they leave.

Recovery After Oral Sedation
Oral sedatives generally have a longer-lasting effect compared to nitrous oxide sedation. It may take 30 minutes to a few hours for the effect of the sedative to wear off. During this period, we suggest that children rest well and avoid indulging in any playful activities, as there might be a higher risk of falls or accidental bumps. Once your child feels fully alert, they can get back to their routine activities.
