What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as “laughing gas sedation,” is used as a safe and easy-to-administer alternative for children. When the gas is inhaled, it works within minutes to ease nervousness, making your child feel more at ease before a dental procedure. Since the process is quick and comfortable, it is especially beneficial for little ones who may feel restless or have difficulty sitting still during dental visits.
We understand that undergoing a dental procedure can be nerve-wracking, especially for children. That’s why we use nitrous oxide sedation to ensure they remain stress-free and relaxed throughout their treatment.
What Happens During Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Our Katy dental team recommends nitrous oxide sedation for children who feel nervous or fearful before dental procedures, have difficulty sitting still for longer procedures, or have a strong gag reflex. At the start of the procedure, our pediatric dentist will place a small mask over your child’s nose, which delivers a controlled amount of nitrous oxide gas. When inhaled for a few minutes, it induces a sleep-like or drowsy state.
Some children may experience a tingly or light sensation, indicating that the sedation is taking effect. Your child will stay awake and be able to respond to instructions, but they won’t feel discomfort during the procedure. Our team will also monitor your child’s vitals throughout the treatment to ensure their health and safety.

Recovery After Sedation
Once treatment is complete, we will stop the inflow of nitrous oxide gas and allow your child to breathe in pure oxygen. This helps flush out the remaining traces of the gas, allowing your child to return to full consciousness within minutes.
Although children can return to routine activities soon after, it is best for them to rest for some time. This not only helps recover from the sedative effect but also promotes healing after dental treatment.
