Benefits of Fluoride Treatments
While children are generally more prone to cavities, the risk can be prevented with fluoride treatments. Their benefits include:
- Strengthened tooth enamel: Fluoride fortifies the tooth enamel, creating a protective shield that resists cavity-causing bacteria.
- Cavity prevention: Early fluoride application can significantly lower the risk of cavities in children.
- Reduced sensitivity: They help restore and reinforce enamel, which can cover exposed nerves and lessen tooth sensitivity.
- Cost-effective care: This treatment is easy, painless, and cost-effective, avoiding the need for expensive dental procedures down the line.
- Healthy smile: By preventing cavities and strengthening teeth, fluoride treatments help children maintain bright, healthy smiles as they grow.
What Is The Best Age for Fluoride Treatments
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that children should begin receiving fluoride treatments as soon as their first teeth erupt, typically around 6 to 7 months of age. These treatments are also beneficial for children aged 6 years or older, as they help protect and strengthen their permanent teeth.
The frequency of fluoride application depends on your child’s specific oral health needs. Our Katy specialist typically recommends fluoride treatments every three months for children who are more prone to cavities, drink non-fluoridated water, or are undergoing orthodontic treatment such as braces.

What to Expect During a Fluoride Treatment
Our pediatric dentist in Katy will first examine your child’s teeth to check for any signs of decay. Although some children may feel a bit nervous before the procedure, rest assured that it is painless and usually takes just a few minutes.
During the treatment, a fluoride solution is brushed onto your child’s teeth and allowed to sit for a few minutes. Our team ensures that your child does not ingest the solution during this step.
After the treatment, your child can resume their normal activities. However, it’s important that they avoid brushing their teeth for at least six hours. This allows the fluoride ions to fully absorb into the enamel for maximum protection.
