What Is IV Sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation involves administering a sedative medication directly into the bloodstream through a small IV line. Unlike an oral sedative, which must be absorbed through the digestive system, this technique works quickly and takes immediate effect. With IV sedation, we can adjust the medication dosage to help your child feel relaxed while minimizing any feelings of pain or restlessness.
Benefits of Pediatric IV Sedation
Our Katy kids dentist may only recommend IV sedation in specific cases where other types of dental sedation may not seem to be effective. The benefits of this technique include:
- It is ideal for children with severe dental anxiety or a low pain threshold.
- Since the medication is delivered directly, the dosage can be adjusted according to your child’s needs.
- This technique is helpful when multiple or complex treatments are needed in one appointment.

What Happens During IV Sedation
Before the appointment, our team will provide you with specific instructions to prepare your child for sedation. When you arrive at the clinic, our anesthesiologist will safely secure the IV line to your child’s arm. It delivers a precise dosage of the sedative medication directly into the bloodstream. The medication will cause your child to enter a deeply relaxed state. Although they will not be fully conscious, they will remain comfortable and will not feel pain or distress during the procedure.
Our anesthesiologist will also monitor your child’s vital signs and adjust the sedation dosage as necessary, ensuring that your child remains relaxed and safe throughout the procedure. After the treatment, we will carefully remove the IV line, bandage the area, and provide recovery guidelines.
Since the effect of IV sedation takes much longer to wear off, your child may remain sleepy for a few hours afterward. They should be monitored closely until they feel fully alert and awake.
