Who Can Benefit from Pediatric Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry involves the use of nitrous oxide gas or certain medications to ease anxiety and help children feel relaxed during dental procedures. Many kids feel nervous before a dental visit, and those with dental phobia may struggle to attend routine checkups.
That’s why we offer sedation options to create a gentle, reassuring experience for young patients. We may recommend dental sedation if your child:
- Feels anxious before dental visits
- Has had negative experiences with past treatments
- Is afraid of needles
- Has difficulty sitting still for long procedures
- Has a sensitive gag reflex
- Has low pain tolerance
- Has to undergo complex dental treatments
Types of Sedation Dentistry Offered at Our Katy, TX Practice
At our Katy dental practice, we offer three types of sedation dentistry, each having a varying effect. Our kids dentist will carefully assess your child’s dental needs and medical history to determine the most effective option.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)
This is the safest and most commonly used sedation for children. Before the dental procedure, we will place a small nasal mask that delivers a consistent stream of nitrous oxide gas, helping your child feel calm within minutes. The effects wear off quickly after treatment, so your child can return to normal activities soon after their visit.
Oral Sedation
For children with mild to moderate dental anxiety, we may prescribe an oral sedative to be taken an hour before their appointment. This method will help them feel more relaxed and at ease during treatment. During the procedure, your child will remain aware of their surroundings but won’t experience pain or discomfort.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is the most potent type of sedation, reserved only for children with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing complex treatments. The medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream through an IV line, taking immediate effect. Since the effect of the sedative lasts for several hours, we recommend monitoring your child until they fully recover.
